We know that information
architecture = action
Most
of the time we can come up with plenty of reasons why we can't or why
we won't change the structure of information. And any of us who work with
organizations know that these obstacles are not problems with the information
itself. We face the twin roadblocks of people and politics.
Confronting
roadblocks: people and politics
Do they say it can't
be done? "We can't" usually means "we won't."
Ask "why not?" If
complaints and excuses keep you imprisoned in a world of mediocre information,
find a way to do things differently. Anything that is considered impossible
is an opportunity waiting to be harvested.
Taking
action
Electronic information
is changing our lives. Business forecasters believe Intranets will fundamentally
change the way workers communicate, shifting our work-lives to a degree
not experienced since the telephone.
We have a task to
do.
People and politics
won't go away. But we can educate others. If we are committed to helping
users find their way through information, we can find our way around roadblocks.
We can transform problems into opportunities. As information architects,
we must take action.
We believe those
who never feel any fear are people who never attempt to accomplish anything.
We believe we can achieve great things if we refuse to let our limitations
stand in our way. We believe it's possible to build clear documents. That's
our job.
